Provincial mammal and provincial bird declared

Karachi, 10 July 2012: Sindh government has notified Sindh Ibex (Capra aegagrus) as provincial mammal and black partridge (Francolinus francolinus) as provincial bird of Sindh. The notification was issued by Sindh Chief Minister and copies have been sent to concerned departments.

Commenting on the notification, Rab Nawaz, Director Indus for All Programme (WWF - P) said that the decision would help in protection of the endangered species and nature conservation. He further said that proposal was jointly initiated by government of Sindh and Indus for All Programme, WWF – Pakistan. He hoped that government will now approve drafts of new rules and regulation regarding replacement of outdated Sindh Wildlife rules of 1974 and Sindh Forest Act of 1927.

While WWF – P’s Manager Policy and partnership Fund, Altaf Hussain Sheikh said that government of Sindh has taken this decision at a right time when Sindh wildlife is facing multiple threats.  He said that it shows government’s commitment towards conservation of biological diversity and significance of declared species. He said that number of concerned senior wildlife experts, academia and other stakeholders such as IUCN were engaged in extensive deliberation process. “These species will be held as Sindhi symbols in coming times,” he added.

This is also to mention that government of Sindh had notified the Neem as provincial tree in 2010 in consultation with WWF - P and other stakeholders.
