Vulture Safe Zone! The Protected Area for Vultures

The biggest success of any species conservation work is ensuring a sustainable population in the wild. WWF - Pakistan has established a Vulture Safe Zone at Nagar Parkar area in Sindh in the year 2012. This area is home to the largest population of the White - backed vultures in Pakistan and also considered as the last stronghold of this species presence in Pakistan. The Vulture Safe Zone is an area of 100 km in diameter and is acting as protected area for Gyps vulture species. Within this area the use of Diclofenac Sodium is being eradicated through large-scale awareness raising components amongst the farmers, veterinarians and general public. The alternative vulture safe drug ‘Meloxicam’ is promoted along with free livestock vaccination camps in the priority villages. The aim is to provide safe food to the vultures close to their breeding grounds.
